CBD SAFETY

HEMP Products » CBD SAFETY

While there are plenty of resources that will tell you about the benefits that CBD can offer, if you are trying cannabidiol for the first time you are right to wonder: is CBD safe? The good news is that yes, CBD is a safe product, but it is always important to understand the risks and side effects associated with any new product you use.

Safe doses of CBD

As the use of CBD is a reasonably new phenomenon, and it comes in many dosages and applications (oil, flowers, creams, gummies), there is no recommended dose that will fit every person and every medical problem. There has, however, been research done into what constitutes a safe or unsafe amount of CBD that a person can take.

It is only natural that someone might be concerned about a potential overdose with any new product, particularly as CBD still has the association with marijuana, but when used as directed, there is no possibility of ingesting an unsafe amount.

First time users often start with as little as 5 mg of CBD per day (1ml of oil at 5% concentration), but those with more experience using CBD or more severe symptoms may regularly take up to 100 mg per day. Studies indicate that to overdose on CBD, a person would need to consume more than 50,000 mg of CBD in a single sitting – a feat that would prove very difficult and could certainly not be done accidentally.

No potential for abuse

For people that have tried medications to treat pain, anxiety and other ailments, but can become less effective over time.

There is no need to worry that using CBD will become habit forming. The World Health Organization (WHO) published a report in 2017 stating that CBD is “generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile” and that “in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”

CBD side effects

CBD is generally very well-tolerated, but no health product can claim to be completely free from side effects. Fortunately, any adverse reactions reported by people using CBD are generally mild and non-serious.

Side effects when using CBD may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Reduced appetite
  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Diarrhea

Of course, any side effects experience will depend on a number of factors including the dosage you take, your history with CBD and your own physical makeup. Many people often find that the side effects only occur during the first couple of weeks, or when raising their dosage.

Potential problems using CBD

There are a couple of reasons that some people may experience problems with CBD, but this is not necessarily due to the CBD itself. In some cases, people may have an intolerance to CBD, but this is similar to the way that some people have adverse reactions to pollen or particular foods.

Another reason for an issue with CBD is that the person might have an intolerance to something else found within the product. This could be any one of the cannabinoids that are found within hemp, including THC. In this case, trying CBD isolate could be a way to discover if the reaction is to the CBD or something else.

But one of the most common reasons that using CBD does not produce the desired result, or even and adverse reaction is due to the quality of the product. Cheap CBD products not only have the potential to contain impurities and chemicals, but without proper dosage testing and labelling, it makes it difficult for customers to use the product safely and consistently.

Safe CBD products

As CBD is not considered a medication, it is not subject to the same regulations as pharmacy products. While this is good news on one hand as it means customers can buy from local or small-scale producers, it does mean that they need to take care when choosing which CBD product to buy.

CBD products can be found at all different price points, but there’s often a reason that lower-priced oils are so cheap. Discount CBD can have issues that range from unsafe additives to inconsistent amounts of CBD (or even no CBD), which can cause problems for customers trying to establish their dosage.

Buy organic – choosing a product that has been produced organically will mean that it’s free of pesticides and other chemicals, which could be a source of adverse reactions to the product and potentially harmful.

Look for details – unless you are buying CBD isolate, the CBD product will contain other natural chemical compounds, as well being suspended in a carrier oil. It is important that you know exactly what you are putting into your body, particularly if you have any intolerances or allergies.

Buy lab tested – all reputable CBD products should be lab tested and have proof of the test available. A lab test will not only show you the amount of CBD in the product, but prove that the THC content is below legal levels.
